Exclamation used auto trans. fluid??

i was talking with an out of town buddy of mine, who is a buddy with one of the lead mechanics (he trains other mechanics) with ford.

he was talking with a buddy about putting some sort of a marine filter on a ford diesel truck that would allow you to run used atf as fuel. anyone heard about this before?

im not really sure about details, because i live in tennessee, and he lives in florida. i googled it, but didnt find too many results. any ideas?

Use the search feature. Burning used ATF and Motor oil has been discussed. Here is a good place to start.

Exclamation Look at this thread...

The red die in ATF is the same as used to mark "off road only" diesel. There is a possibility of getting in BIG trouble if your tank was ever "dipped":

I fill my new filters with AFT when there is no diesel or VO handy. When restoring an old vehicle, particularly a diesel I run it till hot, then drain the oil and refill the crankcase with ATF and run the motor for a minute, drain the atf and refill with the proper oil, it cleans the goo from the motor. I put used ATF in my tote of VO at times, just a few gallons into 275 of oil just because I hate to waste it. Lots of differing opinions about burning it though....

this is implied, but for clarification, that ATF (as a fuel or engine cleaner) better be clean/filtered to at least 2 microns or you run the risk of injector or bearing damage.

Default Burning many types of oil

Oil is Oil principles are all the same in the end. I burn wvo, vo, hydraulic (great for cold temps due to non gel) ATF, Engine Oil, and mineral oil. Only things not to burn are Brake fluid, eats orings and seals in a metter or miles. 80/90 75/140, somehwta obvious but its due to being such a heavy grade.

Oils vary greatly, some form other compounds when burnt, some have high or low lubricity, some are too thin to broperly lubricate the workings of the IP and injectors, some are detergent, others are not.

DieselPower did an article on it, remember the guys who write these articles are paid by the word and don't exactly pencil whip the details or research... http://www.dieselpowermag.com/tech/f...uel/index.html

Default I killed a set of injectors in two days once

I filled my veggy tank with some old hydraulic fluid from a bean cutter manufacturer. I drove yo Wyoming and by the time I got there I was smoking white smoke like crazy. I ended up rebuilding the injectors. Be careful.

Watch out for water in hydraulic fluid. Just last week the engine was frozen on a piece of equipment we have, turned out the hydraulic fluid had enough water in it to freeze the pump. Frozen pump prevented the engine from turning. A few hours of heat got it going. This fluid would be bad for an injection pump and injectors. Typically hydraulic tanks are large, and condensation can be a problem.
