Default a 6-71 fuel flow question

Hi Chris,
I thought I would ask you because you have Detroits.
On my 6-71 the fuel is sucked from the tank thru a 30 micron primary filter (ff5207) thru the pump then pushed thru a 10 micron secondary filter (ff5206) and into the head.
As I understand it now, I,m supposed to move the secondary filter to a point before the pump which would the give me two filters one after the other.
If this is true, could I replace the 2 filters with a larger say Racor 1000 10micron before the pump?
What do you do?
Thanks
Jerry

What I have done is plumb it to draw through a primary filter with good flow and large surface area, into the selector valve, into the pump, out of the pump and through a standard small prefilter, then into the head. This way if the pump ever spits bits the chunks will get stopped before they hit the injectors.

on our generators, we have two gauges, a vacuum and pressure so we know which filter is clogged.
using baldwin filters bf5800 bf5810 on all of our 71 series.

My fuel feeds from the tanks through twin FG1000 Racors, into the fuel pump and through BF5810's into the heads. Remember that there is a restricted orifice in the return line fitting, discard it and you will loose fuel pressure.

I am replumbing to incorporate an electric pump for system priming, when not being used for priming and sitting at the dock it will be used for a fuel polishing system. Having to remove and fill filters on 160F engines in the bilge of a boat at sea is something you only do twice. Once because you have to and the second time to remind you to get off your duff and install a self priming system. Hey does anyone know hoe to get chicken curry chunks out of a bildge pump screen?

Thanks DeepRoots, for the tip about the pressure guage on the output of the pump to monitor the filter.

Chris,
It sounds like you are using the Baldwin BF5810 as a secondary and both diesel and WVO pass thru it. How long between changes?
Thanks for shareing

No I am not, I was describing how it is factory plumbed. I am putting a stainless filter after the fuel pump just to catch any debris should the pump wet the bed. Never share filters. I will post a drawing later today.

Hi Chris,

I'm studying your DD671 fuel flow drawing because I hope that we'll be doing something similar with my DD671 powered bus conversion, as we discussed a week or two back.

I have a question regarding the location of the heat exchanger "J". The heat exchanger is for VO, yes? I would have guessed that it would be located between the VO filter "E" and feed valve "G".

I am also about as ignorant as a newbie can be regarding plumbing of VO system components, but am confused and hoped you might clue me in.

Thanks!
Bus Boy
